Should just stick to a fitted sheet or go for a flat sheet? This has been the topic of much debate over the internet and people simply do not seem to agree on the matter. In case you are not sure what the debate is all about and the details related to Flat sheet vs Fitted Sheet, continue reading the blog and you are going to find out.
A flat sheet is a rectangular piece of cloth in some appropriate size, also known as a top sheet or non-fitted sheet. It lies between sleeper and duvet or blanket. A fitted sheet is also a bedding accessory. A fitted sheet has elastic on its edge to fit with mattress. It is also known as a bottom sheet.
Let's dive in flat sheet vs fitted sheet debate to understand flat sheet and fitted sheet difference. As the name suggests, the flat sheet is just flat, rectangular, and simple piece of cloth which folds easily and lies flat on any surface. Fitted sheets tend to have elasticated corners which have been designed so that it can be pulled over the mattress. This ensures a secure and snug fit. Moreover, they don’t lie flat and are pretty difficult to fold.
Conventionally speaking, fitted sheets are also called the bottom sheets. These are the ones that are used for covering and protecting the mattress. You lie directly on top of this. The only thing that is used under them is an added mattress protector.
Flat sheets are also referred to as the top sheets or non-fitted bed sheets. It is traditionally placed on top of the fitted sheets but is placed beneath the blankets and duvets. These are there for making the bed look more inviting. It will protect the blankets and the duvet covers from becoming dirty. The plan here is to make sure that the flat sheet can be washed on a regular basis without having to wash the duvet cover.
To some people, the addition of flatbed is taken to be superfluous. This leads to more manual work and folding when you make the bed. Others take the flat sheet to be an important part of the bedding set and are pretty confused when people omit these.
Thus, the question is whether you are going to use it or not? The answer is, it will all come down to the personal taste. In case you find too much hassle for folding and tucking the corners of the flat sheet when you make the bed if you see that there is an extra layer of cotton apart from the duvet, it is to make you warm and leave it out. While, on the other hand, you consider it easier to change and wash a flat sheet instead of duvet covers and blankets and comforter like the way flat sheet looks with the sheets look with the bedding, you can use it.
Flat cotton bed sheets are used for the summer months in place of the duvet. As a matter of fact, many non-believers make exceptions since this helps them cool on warm nights.
Now you will get to know the difference between fitted sheets and flat sheets. It is necessary to ensure that you are choosing the right one to cater to your requirements. With fitted sheets, you have to choose the right size that will match your bedding requirements as fitted corners are not going to work properly on the wrong size whether or not you use the mattress. For example, if you have a double bed, you are going to need double fitted sheets. It is necessary to pay attention to the height of the mattress. Whether or not you use the mattress topper, you need thicker mattresses for deep fitted sheets to make sure that the sheets fit around the mattress and stay in place.
The rule with a flat sheet is that it is more relaxed. You will be able to choose the king size flat sheet for the double bed if you want to create a border or if you have a thick mattress.
Colour is also necessary to consider when you choose a flat sheet vs fitted sheet as it has to harmonize with the rest of the bed linen. Classic colors like white and cream are easy to match up. However, you will be able to create a large number of harmonizing color schemes with the bedding if you have to opt for something a little exciting. Flat, as well as fitted sheets, are available in a wide range of colors.
The trend over recent years is one that has been going on in European countries is to use a duvet, duvet cover, and bottom sheet when making the bed. The point has been made that the top flat sheet would be one less sheet to launder, but it would also mean that you probably would have to launder the duvet cover more frequently. That part of the debate seems to come to a draw at this point since it really would not decrease the number of items that would have to be laundered.
Flat Sheet | Fitted Sheet |
It is a duvet protector | It is a mattress protector |
Easier to fold. | Difficult to fold. |
Easy to iron. | Difficult to iron. |
They store flat | Will not store flat. |
You can sleep under the flat sheet during hot nights. | You can't sleep under the fitted sheet in any season |
Easier to keep on a mattress since it will not come loose until you want to take it off. | May work lose when used as a bottom sheet if not tucked tightly enough, especially for restless sleepers. |
Makes it easier to make up the bed Fewer wrinkles for more restful sleep | More manual work to make a bed |
Traps cooler air in like an air conditioner in hot weather. | Fitted sheets don't because we can not sleep under the fitted sheet. |
Adds a layer of warmth in cooler weather | Use of hospital corners will keep it in place |
takes more time to make the bed | Difficult to get off unless you want it off |
Keep in mind that both types of sheets are available in many different kinds of fabrics. Today’s sheets are made to be easy to care for and may need little to no iron if the label instructions are followed.
According to some bedding experts; nearly 50% of bed buying customers only want a bottom sheet, not both. Many leading manufacturers have shifted the sets they now offer in stores. Most sets now come with a fitted bottom sheet and two pillowcases. If the buyer wants a flat sheet, they have to be purchased separately.
The debate as to whether to make a bed with a top sheet or just a bottom sheet, or the use of both does not show any signs of slowing down anytime soon. The longer the debates continue, the more individuals will voice their opinions to be sure.
What the bottom line is, it is up to you, your tastes and your lifestyle to determine which of these combinations you desire. Some feel as though making the bed daily is a form of self-care. To them, it is something that is familiar and grounding. Besides, there’s something about coming home from a long day’s work to a neatly made bed and tidy room that makes coming home feel comfortable and safe.
It matters to you how your bed looks and feels as well as what is on it.

I love flat sheets of Aanya Linen and I like to use it no matter what people think about it.
Omg I can’t get over how much I love flat sheets.
Thanks for this post. I love your products.
There are so many advantages to a flat sheet. I don’t think people can refuse to use the flat sheet just because they don’t want to make bed daily.
There may be conflict between flat and fitted sheet but I also like to use flat sheet over fitted sheet.
