What is Satin?
All of us have come across satin one time or the other. The luxurious, lustrous fabric is smooth and slippery to touch and has been a status symbol for decades. From royal bridal gowns to cozy bedsheets, satin finds its way in our lives. So What is satin? Let's find out.
A weave of It can comprise of many combinations of fabrics, producing different qualities of it. The resultant fabric is soft and glossy on the outside and matte on the other side.
What is Satin, Sateen or Silk Satin?
When people enquire what is satin? Rarely, they get the right answer. Most of the time, they get tangled up between silk satin, satin, and sateen. But not anymore.
Satin silk is commonly referred to as just silk. It‘s silk manufactured using a satin weave. This is the highest and most expensive quality of satin which is widely used in luxury items like bridal wear, curtains, etc.
To make satin more affordable and accessible to all, manufacturers started mixing more fibers to silk. A most common combination is of natural silk, rayon, nylon, and polyester. Minimum interlacing between the four fabrics gives the shimmery and soft texture to the final product.
People always confuse between satin and sateen. While silk is always a prime raw material in It. Sateen is a completely different material. We make It entirely of cotton. As a result, sateen is more durable and tough and can withstand wear and tear so experts suggest to use it to make beddings, drapery, etc.
Characteristics:-Just like any other fabric, satin comes with its upsides and downsides. Some of these are:
- Wrinkle-proof: It does highly wrinkle-resistant, unlike other fabrics.
- Durable: Since It contains silk and long filament fibers, they are strong and long-lasting as compared to other fabrics.
- Alluring drapes: Its weaves create the most beautiful drapes which make them ideal for making elegant dresses and curtains.
- Difficult to manage: It is very difficult to work with. The slippery and soft texture can make the sewing process a nightmare.
Types:-
- Antique: Antique has a small textured feel and luminous appearance. A mix between acetate and rayon, we use this It widely to make decorative items.
- Charmeuse: Charmeuse is a combination of silk, polyester or rayon and is popular in women's clothing. While making bridesmaid, flower girl and wedding dresses we use charmeuse widely.
- Crepe back: Crepe back is a reversible fabric. We can use it as a crepe side or satin. We use it widely in making party dresses and bridal gowns.
- Stretched satin: Stretched satin is regular satin with 5% spandex added to it. This is to give the garment a more fitted look. We use it to make pants, dresses and sports apparels.
It is one luxurious and shiny fabric that finds its use in different fields of fashion. Nowadays, It can be easily afforded by many, thanks to other fibers, but still stands as one of the richest fabrics available in the industry.
